Spangereid in Lindesnes was a chiefdom in the Viking era. Archaeological finds and excavations show that during the Viking Era there was a channel between Lehn Fjord and Njerve fjord, through the midst of what today is the center of Spangereid. Most likely the Vikings built the canal in order to be able to avoid having to round weathered Lindesnes. The channel certainly provided both revenue and control of seafarers between East and West. In 2007 it was "reopened" in form of a copy of the Viking canal, and it is again possible to arrive by boat between east and west without having to go around Lindesnes.
